Chapter Seventeen: The Betrayal

Katerina must’ve gone home.

I forced a reluctant Chuck into my truck and raced over to her place, then screeched to a halt in front of her house.

Tyler’s Mercedes was there. Chuck refused to leave the truck, and he bared his teeth when I tried to drag him out. The wolf traps must have given him the creeps, or maybe he didn’t want to be around during my talk with her. I wasn’t sure I wanted to be there myself.

I took a deep breath and strode up to the porch. Walking up those four steps was one of the hardest things I’ve done in my life. I felt that some enormous catastrophe was about to happen.

I rang the doorbell.

Nobody answered.

I rang again.

Total silence.

“Come off it, Katerina. I know you’re in there!” I shouted. “What have I done to you, for Christ’s sake? My mother was sick and—”

The door flew open so violently that it bounced against the wall. She stormed out the screen door wearing a yellow ruffled blouse with sleeves down to her wrists, an embroidered vest, and jeans stuffed into boots decorated with chains. She had rings on her fingers and her hair was caught in a big bow at the back of her neck and looked like a young female knight straight out of the eighteenth century. All she needed was a sword, and given her expression of absolute rage, she was probably sorry not to have one so she could sink it into my heart. She stopped dead in front of me and filled her lungs with the chill air, as if to calm herself, then glared at me. When she spoke, her tone was icy.

“Why did you kiss me?”

“I-I don’t know. I’m… I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have done it.”

I could see her fury mounting, like a cold, sharp blade.

“You know I don’t want to get involved with a guy, but you kissed me anyway. Do you do that often?”

“Do what?”

“Kiss girls and make them fall for you and then tell them you don’t want to see them anymore?”

I was at a complete loss. I leaned against the wooden porch column while she stood there, as straight as an avenging angel.

“I never said I didn’t want to see you again.”

She calmly held out her phone to me, but I could feel she was trying to keep herself under control.

The screen displayed a text message.

Sorry. Big mistake. Dont B mad. U and me, no way. Dont call me ennymor.

It was full of spelling mistakes. Katerina snatched her phone back and tapped on the keyboard.

“So you didn’t send me this text?” she asked. “At the time I thought it was a joke that you would explain. But the next day you weren’t in class, and at exactly eleven o’clock, I got this!”

Her eyes blazed, and her voice had risen by an octave. She held out the phone to me again, and I stared at the screen in astonishment.

It was a photograph. My face was easy to recognize in spite of the blond girl with the naked back sprawled on top of me: Serafina.
